Reason for Bandh in Karnataka 22nd january 2011
please do read the end of the comment!!
BANGALORE: Many educational institutions in Karnataka did not open, state-run buses went off roads, and a few vehicles were stoned Saturday as the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) organised a daylong shutdown to protest governor H R Bhardwaj's move to allow chief minister B S Yeddyurappa's prosecution over corruption charges.
"We have withdrawn bus services at most of the places across the state after many were stoned," a spokesperson of the Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation ( KSRTC), which runs buses across the state, said.
The Bangalore Metropolitan Transport Corporation ( BMTC) said its services in the city were not affected though there were instances of stone throwing late Friday soon after Bhardwaj granted permission to prosecute Yeddyurappa over corruption charges.
"We will withdraw the services if our buses are attacked," a spokesperson said.
In Bangalore, police clamped prohibitory orders that bar assembly of five or more persons at a place for two days.
"We have deployed around 18,000 police personnel on duty in the city to maintain peace," a Bangalore city police spokesperson said.
BJP activists in Yeddyurappa's home district of Shimoga, about 280 km from Bangalore, blocked trains for about half an hour.
Most of the schools and colleges across the state declared a holiday fearing violence. The shutdown, however, would not affect most of the IT firms as Saturday is holiday for them.
BJP workers in north Karnataka towns of Hubli, Bidar, Gulbarga, Haveri and Mysore, Tumkur, and other districts in south began protests late Friday itself after Bhardwaj's sanction to file criminal cases against Yeddyurappa.
The permission to launch criminal proceedings against BJP's first chief minister in south India was sought by two Bangalore-based advocates, Sirajin Basha and K N Balaraj, on Dec 28 following the revelation that Yeddyurappa had favoured his kin with prime land in and around Bangalore.
Yeddu are you some special character huh?? if u are guilty with corruption charges then why not throw you in jail and if you are not then why are u so scared. what will you get by callin bandh in karnataka , it is not your daddys farm house.- Janta(public)

US pressures INDIA ON IRAN.
New Delhi: At a time when the nuclear deal was being negotiated, the US had tried to pressurise India over its ties with Iran and even objected to President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad's visit to Delhi, saying it would give "platform
for an enemy of the US", according to Wikileak documents.
The cables sent by the then US Ambassador David Mulford to the State Department make it clear that India did not want America to tell it "what to do, especially in public" as it wanted to be seen pursuing an independent foreign policy.
"This government has to be seen following an independent foreign policy, not responding to dictation from the US," the then Foreign Secretary Shivshankar Menon told Mulford, according to one of the cables.
The cables reveal that Mulford had tried to play the 'nuclear deal' card to pressurise India against hosting Ahmadinejad on April 29, 2008, when he had a "stopover" of few hours in New Delhi while returning home from Sri Lanka.
During the brief visit, the Iranian President had held talks with Prime Minister Manomhan Singh.
"The average American will wonder why the US has gone out of its way to have a nuclear cooperation initiative with India, when India is so friendly to Iran," Mulford had told the Indian officials.
He had warned that the visit would be seen by Americans, especially the Congress, as "providing a platform for an enemy of the US".
Mulford's cable notes that "Members of (US) Congress and the Administration strongly believe that Ahmadinejad is guilty of killing Americans in Iraq, developing a nuclear weapons program to blackmail the world, and sponsoring international terrorist activities... I cannot predict what the effect of this visit will be."
Responding to the US' warnings on the issue, Menon had told Mulford that "there is nothing in this visit that should upset you".
Menon had emphasised that India had little choice after the Iranian authorities had requested for a stop in transit.
"We can talk with him (Ahmadinejad) without affecting our other relationships," Menon told America citing the strong India-Israel relationship that has withstood India's flirtation with Iran.
He added that Iran was important for India as the two countries needed to work together for dealing with Afghanistan.
After his interactions with Menon, Mulford had concluded that no US interference was required in Indo-Iranian relations as India had been warned about risking its image of an emerging global player.
The Ambassador had observed that "sharp, public comments from the US government will only push India and Iran closer
together."
ONION PRICES
Why do you thin onion prices have reached such a height. Is it just becasue the onion crop was spoilt. NO - the answer is a Big NO. inspite of the spoiling of crop the prices would be still low but the black marketers who want to profit in the crisis situation have stocked the onions in their stores so that they can further jack up the prices. The Indian government - if it really wants to stop inflation , it should crackdown on these fraudsters and black listing them.

BJP, CPI ask Govt to name those having black money in Swiss Banks
PTI – Tue, Jan 18 7:26 PM ISTNew Delhi, Jan 18 (PTI) The BJP and the CPI today mounted pressure on the Government to make public identities of all those Indians who have stashed huge amounts of black money in Swiss banks.
In Anand (Gujarat), senior BJP leader L K Advani hoped the Supreme Court hearing a petition in this regard would take appropriate steps and force the Government to bring the money back.
In Bhubaneshwar, BJP president Nitin Gadkari said, "UPA Government should, without any hesitation, make public names of all those who have stashed black money in Swiss Bank accounts."
Claiming that about Rs 21 lakh thousand crore had been deposited in Swiss banks, Gadkari said instead of trying to suppress facts, the government should publicise the names particularly after the WikiLeaks report on the matter.
"Any reluctance in declaring the names of Swiss bank account holders will simply raise doubts about the integrity of people at the helm," he said.
Asked if names of BJP leaders may appear in the list, Gadkari said action must be taken without any consideration.
"Why this dogged refusal to reveal the names of those who have accounts abroad... The country has a right to know and expects the names to be made public," BJP spokesperson Ravi Shankar Prasad said in Delhi.
Other than the PIL in the Supreme Court, the issue of Indian black money stashed abroad is in the news after a former Swiss banker gave details of 2,000 such account holders from the US, Britain and Asia to WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange.
The CPI demanded that Government initiate action to confiscate the money and bring it back to the country.
"All these accounts should be confiscated and used for the common good of the nation. CPI demands that the government should take up the issue with the Swiss Banks Association and Swiss government immediately and settle it," a statement by the party''s Central Secretariat said here..

Sonia Gandhi
"Mr Ottavio Quattrocchi and his wife Maria Quattrocchi were very close to Mr Rajiv Gandhi and Mrs Sonia Gandhi. When Shri Rajiv Gandhi became prime minister, Mr Quattrocchi and his family members used to visit the Prime Minister House and the family members of Shri Rajiv Gandhi also used to visit the house of Mr Quattrocchi."
"In the initial period of prime ministership of Shri Rajiv Gandhi, his children used to stay at Mr Quattrocchi's house during the foreign visits and domestic visits of the prime minister. We used to perform our shift duties at the residence of Mr Quattrocchi on such occasions. Sometimes, Mrs Sonia Gandhi has also stayed in the house of Mr Quattrocchi and at that time we used to perform our duties there."
"At No. 5 and 7 Race Course Road, private cars were not allowed to enter the bungalow. Only the security checked ferry-cars of the Special Protection Group (SPG) used to carry such visitors from the reception to the porch and back. Mr Quattrocchi and Maria Quattrocchi were very close to Shri Rajiv Gandhi's family and they got free access to the PM house. All visitors to No. 5 and 7 Race Course Road were issued passes at the reception near the alighting point. Every time, a card was kept ready for Mr Quattrocchi and his family members for their visits to the PM's house. Everybody in the SPG posted at the PM's house knew Mr Quattrocchi and his family members. Hence, there was no question of not identifying them."
These sensational revelations, dug out by INDIA TODAY, are part of the court records in the infamous Bofors kickback case. These statements were recorded by the CBI in 1997 and have been gathering dust since then. As part of its investigations, the CBI had recorded evidence from an SPG official and several drivers, including Sasi Dharan who was working at Snamprogetti, where Quattrocchi worked as a general manager.
SPG official Naresh Chandra Gosain testified before CBI inspector Ghan Shyam Rai on March 29, 1997. Gosain was an Intelligence Bureau officer. Between 1984 and 1987, he was posted in the SPG team provided to Rajiv Gandhi and was part of his escort team. Between 1987 and 1989, Gosain served as the personal security officer of Sonia.
During H.D. Deve Gowda's prime ministership in 1997, Gosain deposed before the CBI, and in the course of his testimony, spoke at length about the close family ties between the Gandhis and the Quattrocchis.
On January 4, when the Income Tax Appellate Tribunal's judgment shed light on the kickbacks received by Quattrocchi, the Congress quickly went into denial mode and tried to distance the Gandhi family from the Italian businessman. Senior party leaders, in fact, worked overtime to play down the relationship between the Gandhis and Quattrocchi. Law Minister Veerappa Moily said, "His (Quattrocchi) direct linkage to the Congress party or its leader is totally baseless and unjustified." But these testimonies speak of the easy access Quattrocchi and his wife Maria had to the Gandhis, including Sonia's mother Paola Maino and sister Marouchka, who often frequented the Italian couple's home in New Delhi. Quattrocchi's proximity, some would say, is well-known. What is not known, however, is that this proximity continued even after he began to be linked to the Bofors scandal.
Dharan's testimony is crucial in unravelling this mystery. He worked as a driver in Snamprogetti, an Italian public sector giant that was represented in India by Quattrocchi. Dharan was Quattrocchi's personal driver. He drove a Mercedes (DIA 6253).
In his testimony, Dharan details the frequent meetings between the Gandhis and the Quattrocchis. "Shri Quattrocchi and Mrs Maria Quattrocchi were very close to Shri Rajiv Gandhi, Sonia Gandhi and his family. I do not know what type of relation they had, but Quattrocchi and Maria used to frequently visit the house of Rajiv and Sonia. I knew it since 1985 when I joined service. At that time, they used to visit Rajiv's Gandhi's house twice or thrice a day... Whenever Sonia's mother or father visited India, I used to drive them to the house of Quattrocchi. They used to remain there for the whole day and Mrs Maria Quattrocchi would take them for shopping. They used to come to India four or five times in the year," says Dharan in his testimony to the CBI.
Equally important is the car log maintained by Dharan, where he details the exact dates when Quattrocchi came to meet Rajiv and Sonia at 5 and 7 Race Course Road or 10 Janpath. These logs are for the period 1989 to 1993. Dharan has mentioned 41 occasions when Quattrocchi came to meet the Gandhis. The meetings between Quattrocchi and Sonia continued even after Rajiv's death in 1991. According to Dharan, Quattrocchi came to 10 Janpath 21 times after May 1991.
By January 25, 1990, a team of CBI officials was already in Switzerland with a list of suspected recipients of the Bofors payback. Between 1988 and 1990, the media was full of allegations about the involvement of Quattrocchi as a middleman in the Bofors deal.
The concluding paragraph in Dharan's testimony is a telling comment on how the Italian businessman left the country in a hurry: "Mr Quattrocchi used to be a secretive man. He never used to speak much to others about himself. Whenever some news report came up about the case, Quattrocchi used to be very upset; he would not be his normal self. His mood would be bad? Shri Quattrocchi left India on the night of July 29, 1993, and on this day also, I had driven him to the airport. At that time he did not have any luggage except one briefcase and he told me he was going for an urgent meeting. Usually, whenever Mr Quattrocchi wanted the car he would tell me in advance but the day he left, he did not tell me in advance."
When contacted, Joginder Singh, who was the CBI director in 1997 when the testimonies were recorded, confirmed to INDIA TODAY that the statements had indeed been taken and that they were a part of court records. He said, "The testimonies do not prove any guilt but they do show the kind of influence Quattrocchi enjoyed."
Both Gosain and Dharan would have been called to court as witnesses if the CBI had managed to extradite Quattrocchi and bring him to India for a trial. But by themselves, the testimonies bear witness to the fact the Congress clearly has some more explaining to do before it can bury the ghost of Bofors.
